4 Ways Marketers Can Train Their Brains to Stay Relevant

Remember that teacher who used curveball questions to throw you off your testing game and made you question yourself, the world, and life in general? Yeah, that's how the marketing industry is for marketers. It's a big curveball question. Problems come out of nowhere and can change directions in a heartbeat.  You think you have all the answers, and then BAM, new information or a challenging business problem arises and you have to figure out how to handle it as quickly and creatively as possible. That's why, in this industry, it's always important to stay on top of your game. Your brain game that is. Here are 4 ways Marketers (and anyone) can train their brains to stay relevant:

1. Go to sleep early. Wake up early.

First of all, do as we say, not as we do!  We are working on this one each and every day. Studies have shown that getting a good nights rest can improve memory and cognitive function. Not only does a good night's rest help your brain function properly, it also allows you to wake up early and get ahead of the game. By waking up early you aren't as rushed and you have time to focus your thoughts on the priorities for the day. Waking up early also gives you time to catch up on the latest news.  And most importantly, waking up early allows you to enjoy that cup of coffee we all crave.

2.  Read.

As a marketer, it is extremely important to read. Reading allows you to grow your cognitive capabilities and expand your knowledge.  It also improves creativity and memory. By reading the latest news stories, blogs, and marketing research, we can prepare our brains to handle those curveballs that the marketing industry loves to throw our way.

3. Listen.

Another way to stay relevant and strengthen brain activity is to listen. Listening to the news, ads on the radio, people, and industry-leading podcasts are great ways to stay relevant and increase brain activity. By training your brain to listen, you can understand more about new innovations in the industry, culture, and what people are interested in, all of which will help you stay relevant in the Marketing industry.

4. Write. Journal. Blog.

Studies have shown that writing helps you preserve memory and improve creativity. By writing about events, news, or life, you are exercising your memory and conveying a story that can potentially influence people. By influencing people or writing about recent events, you will maintain relevancy, an important trait in the marketing world.
